A voice expense tracker that understands whole sentences.
Settl is a voice expense tracker for shared money. You speak the expense the way you would tell a friend, and your AI agent turns it into a logged, split expense that you confirm on screen. Built for groups, trips, and roommates, on iPhone and Android.
How it works
- Say what happened. Hold the mic and talk like a person. No commands to memorize, no fixed phrasing.
- Settl builds the expense. A speech-to-text model transcribes the audio, and a language model extracts who paid, the total, who is involved, and which currency.
- You confirm. The expense card appears on screen, pre-filled and editable. Nothing is logged until you tap confirm.
Any language, any currency
The underlying models are multilingual, so voice input is not limited to English. "Pagué el taxi del aeropuerto" works. So does a sentence that mixes languages and currencies. On trips, Settl logs what was actually spent in the local currency, converts it live, and keeps the original amount on record so group balances stay honest. More on that on the comparison table.
When you would rather not talk
Voice is one door among several, and every door lands in the same place:
- Scan + Describe. Photograph a receipt and add one line of context, like "Mike had the alcohol, split the food evenly." Settl reads the line items and proposes the split.
- Chat. Type the messy situation ("eighty for ramen, but Dev had two bowls") and Settl asks a follow-up if anything is unclear.
- Manual. A regular form, free for everyone, works offline, and never sends content to any AI provider.
Built for shared money, not just receipts
Most voice expense apps stop at capturing a number for your own budget. Settl is an expense splitter: it tracks group balances, shows who lent and who borrowed on every line, and settles a group with the fewest possible transfers, walking each person through who pays whom. If your group is coming from another app, you can import your Splitwise history.
What happens to your voice
Audio is processed in the cloud and discarded once transcription finishes. Only the resulting text is kept, and only after you have agreed in-app to send content to Settl's AI providers. The AI providers page names exactly which vendors process what, and the privacy policy covers retention and deletion.
Common questions
Does the voice feature need an internet connection?
Yes. The audio is transcribed and parsed in the cloud, so voice needs a connection. Manual entry works offline and syncs when you are back online.
What if Settl hears me wrong?
Nothing saves without you. The parsed expense appears on screen, pre-filled and editable: currency, group, who paid, how it splits. Fix anything, then confirm. If you saved something by mistake, undo it from the activity feed.
Is voice input free?
Manual expense splitting is free for everyone. Voice and the other AI features cost money to run, so they are likely to become part of a paid plan; the first 1,000 users get them free for one year from signup, subject to fair-usage limits and our terms.
Say your next expense instead
Free to start on iPhone and Android. Speak it, scan it, or type it; you confirm everything.
