Capture the whole receipt.
In Settl, open the receipt capture flow and take a clear photo including line items, taxes, fees and the final total. Check that the image is readable.

Explain the exceptions.
For a $120 bill with $90 of shared food and $30 of Noah’s drinks, say: “Split the food equally among You, Maya and Noah. Noah pays for the drinks.” The example has no additional tax or tip.

Check the math before using the balance.
Food contributes $30 per person. Noah also pays $30 for drinks. Final shares are You $30, Maya $30, Noah $60. Check that the shares sum to the receipt total and that the payer is correct.
Tax and tip need a rule too.
If that bill adds $12 tax and $18 tip, the final total is $150. Allocating those additions proportionally to each person’s items gives shares of $37.50, $37.50 and $75.00. Splitting them equally would give $40, $40 and $70 instead. Both are different choices; tell Settl which your group agreed on.

Can I just split everything equally?
Yes. State the people and that the entire bill should be split equally.
What if the receipt is wrong or blurry?
Retake the photo or enter the expense manually. Check item names, amounts and the final shares.
Do I need a receipt?
No. You can say the expense or enter it by hand.
